Approximately 100 participants, representing 15 hospitals, attended the two-day Team STEPPS Master training facilitated by Jackie Conrad, MBA, BS, RN, RCC, Cynosure Health Improvement Advisor and Dan Lanari, MBA, DPT, CPHQ, CPPS, Director of Quality and Patient Safety, New Mexico Hospital Association. Sessions were held in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Hospitals sent teams to participate and become Master Trainers with the intent of bringing Team STEPPS strategies back to their organizations as a tool to improve teamwork and communication amongst their health care workers and providers.
What made the training unique was the application of non-traditional methods to teach TeamSTEPPS concepts including the human knot, mouse trap minefield, and the jump rope challenge. Participants had fun with the experiential, hands on teaching methods which reinforced the “bonus” leadership content: building resilience and restoring joy as a strategy for combating burnout in the hospital’s workforce and providers.
